Living Room Redesign - Bright and Cheery

After purchasing a comfortable new brown leather sectional sofa, my client wanted the room to be just as comfortable and adding color was key to turn this living room into a bright and cheery space.  The perfect quick fix to brighten up any room is to add fabric such as pillows and a throw.  And flowers of course are an instant 'pick-me-up':)

LOTS OF PILLOWS...

...AND FLOWERS

This room lacked in the color department and needed a little rearranging to balance it out.

BEFORE REDESIGN

The living room redesign began by clearing the room to get a better idea of the lay of the room.  Being the largest piece, the sofa was placed at an arc in front of the fireplace/TV.  Moving the club chair to the left of the fireplace opened up the space in front of the French doors.  Adding a table and lamp, a reading nook was created under the clock which needed a purpose to make it look intended.  This is a very long wall which needed a little more than a clock so a chair from the dining room was brought in for additional seating placed next to the very large beautiful lamp.  Eventually a bookcase may replace the chair and lamp but using what we already had worked.

AFTER REDESIGN

A colorful throw draping across the back of a sofa always looks good from both the front and the back.

MORE PILLOWS AND A THROW!

A table behind the sofa gives it a finished look.

AFTER LIVING ROOM REDESIGN

Before - brown sofa needing some color....

BEFORE LIVING ROOM REDESIGN

After - using a palate of fun bright-colored pillows changed the room instantly...starting with  "color of the year" - orange which works so well with most any color.

AFTER LIVING ROOM REDESIGN

A room just isn't complete without a reading nook....a comfortable chair, a lamp and a table with some favorite books and fresh flowers such as these beautiful tulips.

Tulips With a Twist

Mother's Day is right around the corner and what mother doesn't love flowers?  I know my Mom does and I'm really glad because I'm bringing some for her as a surprise from Pike's Market in Seattle  - the city where the most gorgeous flowers are grown.  All that rain does pay off.:)

Pike's Market in Seattle

The Skagit Valley Tulip Festival where these tulips are grown is now in its 29th year and has over 350,000 people who flock north to commemorate the beauty of the fields and share in this unique Northwest agricultural experience. Weather permitting, April announces the blooming of the flowers, and hundreds of acres transform from green and brown to brilliant colors that span the rainbow. It is a remarkable sight.  One of these days I hope to make it to this Tulip Festival.

Put a twist on your bouquet with this easy tip by Apartment Therapy.  Trim off the outer two leaves, line up the tulips evenly and trim the bottom of the stems so they are flat. Tie two rubber bands around them then twist in opposite directions.  Voila! A beautiful twisted tulip arrangement that can stand in a bowl.

Turkish Bath Towels

After the remodel of our master bath, I decided to redesign what I could without a total remodel in our guest bath...that comes later.:)  Looking for a "spa-feel", I lightened and brightened it by repainting it from apricot to a more neutral toned-down taupe using accents of blue, white and brown.

A friend who is opening a yoga studio in South America will be using Turkish bath towels for her guests.  I thought that would be an interesting addition to my "spa-like" guest bath.  Using elements from around the world makes for a more interesting room and these Turkish bath towels were just the ticket.  I found mine at an online store turkishtowelstore.com and shipped directly from Turkey.

For a little history behind Turkish towel or pestemal, the Turkish towel was produced by weaving on hand looms by women in Turkey's Eastern Black Sea and Aegean regions and have a history of almost six hundred years.  Nowadays pestemal is woven on electrically-powered advanced looms.  These beautiful towels are a nice big size that come in lots of rich colors.  Colors represent the region of the person wearing it .

I've read that many celebrities such as Jennifer Aniston, Demi Moore, Robert De Niro, Steven Spielberg and Bill Gates use them at the beach.  They can be used as a tablecloth, a throw for your sofa or bed or wherever you need some fabric in a room.  I have a blue and white one folded on the bath counter and a matching one on a seagrass bench in the guest room.

If you had Turkish bath towels, where would you use them?  I would love to hear your ideas!

Interior Design Trends for Spring and Summer of 2012

Some interesting ideas to add color outside this spring from my guest blogger, Sam Marquit.

This spring and summer, look to America’s great outdoors for design inspiration. I’ve already done numerous remodeling projects in East Hampton homes this year; from what I’ve seen, folks are really going rustic.
Especially popular this year is sunset orange, sea blue, hazy-mountain violet and the grayed teal of a blue spruce tree. You don’t need to spend a lot of time and money painting and reupholstering furniture to achieve this look. As long as you have a neutral base, there are many ways you can bring in these hues without blowing the budget:
1. Display glassware on open shelving or glass-front cabinets.

This season’s cool blues, greens and violets lend themselves perfectly to hand-blown glass. Choose glassware that incorporates two or more shades in one piece for the flowing, organic look that is popular now.
2. Place large pottery bowls or planters in prominent places.

Handcrafted pottery is another way to bring in this season’s colors. Choose an unevenly glazed piece for a rustic look or a smooth piece for a modern look.
3. Bring in pattern through linens or a wallpapered accent wall.

Pattern is another interior design trend that is continuing strong this spring and summer. Repetitive patterns such as houndstooth, herringbone, chevron and linked-chain designs are in vogue. If these patterns are too sharp-edged for your taste, some designers are interpreting these patterns in a soft-edged watercolor.
4. A black-and-white color scheme is the perfect backdrop for a punch of bright color.

Although this year’s spring and summer designs focus on color, that doesn’t mean that rooms should be garish or overly colorful. Black and white provides a restful backdrop. White slipcovers for sofas and furniture give the room a light and airy feel for the warmer months. Interior designers are also choosing white burlap as an inexpensive drapery fabric. Burlap drapery panels on rings can easily replace heavier curtains for spring and summer. Burlap panels don’t need to be lined and let in sunlight beautifully.
For spring and summer, large quantities of black are too overpowering. Instead, bring in small quantities of black as an anchoring color. A group of photographs in simple black frames or spindly black metal candlesticks are just right.
